Taking your engagement photos at The Library of Congress in D.C. is perfect if you’re wanting an elegant and timeless location to capture your love….Or if you’re a book lover! You’ll have stunning backdrops indoors and outdoors for a variety of photos. This is also an ideal location during colder or hotter months, since you can take a few photos outside and then sneak indoors for the rest. The steps, marble floors, columns, big windows, and the overall architecture of The Library of Congress is insane! So stunning!

The best time to schedule an engagement session at The Library of Congress in D.C. is definitely on a weekday, either right when it opens or an hour before it closes. You’ll run into fewer crowds during these times. It was actually pretty busy when we did this session…but it’s hard to tell from these photos, right?😉
The Library of Congress is open to the public and free to enter, which makes it a popular spot for tourists. Keep in mind that this location is closed on Sundays and Mondays. You can check out their website for more information HERE when planning your visit. While it’s free to enter, you’ll still need to reserve a timed entry ticket HERE.

The Library of Congress allows personal use photography, including engagement session, as long as it’s respectful and not disruptive to the space and all visitors. A permit is not required, but there are a few important rules to keep in mind when planning your engagement photos at the Library of Congress:
There is security throughout the Library of Congress, and they do keep a close eye on high traffic areas (such as the stairs!). If you stay in one spot, like the stairwell for too long, you may be kindly asked to move along so visitor traffic can flow smoothly. As of now, engagement sessions are is allowed without a permit at the Library of Congress, but guidelines can change so it’s always best to double check before you go.

The Library of Congress is located on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. making it super easy to get to by Metro. Capital South is the closest station, just a 5 minute walk to the Library. I highly recommend taking the Metro or using Uber, as parking around the Library of Congress is very limited.
If you’re driving, there is some street parking in the neighborhood about 5-10 minute walk away, it could take you up to 30 minutes to find a spot. For that reason, I generally do not recommend driving unless it’s absolutely necessary.
